transmothragot my local server running finally. i had to figure out where to go to disable toe IIS service. once it was off, XAMPP worked just fine.
and i never had no stinkin virus. my monitor is just so lousy that i couldn't see the "i" in "inetinfo.exe."
in a few weeks i'll be ready to roll again!
